Caitlin Manion – Business Administration Apprenticeship

Level 3

Caitlin first heard about Apprenticeships when she started an employability course during the summer she left school.  As part of the course she was asked to search and apply for apprenticeships and she hadn’t realised that there were so many different types of apprenticeships available.  She had also applied for a few different college courses but in August was invited for an interview with Skills for Health Academy, in partnership with Aintree University Hospital.  She was successful in her Apprenticeship interview as a Business Administrator and explains why she chose to accept the Apprenticeship over going to College – I ended up choosing to do an apprenticeship as I was able to achieve job experience as well as a qualification.”

During her Business Administration Level 2 apprenticeship she worked closely with a lot of different hospital staff and other apprentices within different areas of the NHS. This experience made her consider a job as a Nurse so once she completed her apprenticeship she applied, through Skills for Health Academy, to become a Healthcare Cadet.  This course was more college based than placement based and she found herself struggling to keep up. She completed her 90 Credit Healthcare Cadet course (the first year) but realised that she had felt a lot more confident working within an office environment.

Caitlin then decided to apply for a few different apprenticeships, including a Business Administration apprenticeship within Locality Services at Sefton Council.  Within a couple of weeks she was asked to attend one of their assessment days and further to that was invited for an interview.  At her interview they discussed her previous qualifications and Caitlin was asked if successful, would she be happy to complete a Level 2 NVQ in Customer Services with the training provider Asset Training.  As she had already completed a Level 2 NVQ in Business Administration. Caitlin agreed and later that day was offered the position.

Once she had completed her Level 2 Apprenticeship in Customer Service, Caitlin progressed on to a Level 3 NVQ in Business Administration.  During this time Caitlin won the Apprentice of the Year Award at Sefton Council’s Star Awards in May 2016. Such a fantastic achievement!

After two years of working for Sefton Council as an apprentice and gaining new skills and confidence, Caitlin secured a full time permanent post within the Democratic Services within Sefton Council.  Caitlin’s daily duties consist of: being the first point of call for any visitors on site; maintaining and updating databases; accurately processing invoices; providing administrative support to various service areas; accurately storing and retrieving information; completing all tasks to the deadlines set; providing relevant support and information to customers via telephone or face to face contact and accurately producing minutes of meetings.

Caitlin is now looking forward to furthering her career within Sefton Council.
