Lucy Cant – Social Media Apprentice

Level 4

After completing her GCSEs Lucy went straight onto sixth form to study A Level in ICT and Health and Social & Business Studies.  She gained her qualifications and submitted university applications to Manchester, Edge Hill & UCLAN, all of which were successful.

Lucy was unsure whether to go to university or look for a full time job straight away, she was concerned that going to university would mean not gaining any experience to help her get a job when she finished her degree

When a family friend told Lucy about an apprenticeship opportunity with the Communications team at Sefton Council, she decided to choose this option because whilst she wanted more education, she also wanted to fend for herself and not depend on her family financially.  She applied for the post and after attending the assessment and interview her application was successful.

Lucy’s role as an Advanced Social Media Apprentice is to use a variety of programs to keep an eye on all social media accounts the department has access to and update the news items on each of these accounts, making sure everything is up to date and running smoothly.  She also uploads new items to be published on the Council website and has been part of projects that have involved making videos.

“In my apprenticeship I have gained a lot of office experience, nearly two years, and this will help me to gain work in the future.”

Lucy has completed her level 3 apprenticeship and is very proud of this achievement.  She admits it was hard juggling her level 3 course whilst working full time but has no regrets, “It was the best choice I have made as I am getting paid & also getting an education at the same time.”  She has now progressed onto a level 4 apprenticeship in Digital Marketing within the Communications team for a further 18 months, which will gain her a higher qualification to help further her career.

Lucy’s intends to make sure she takes every opportunity offered to her in order to gain new skills, knowledge and experience so that she can secure a permanent job that will give her security and job satisfaction.
